Personality & Traits

General Overview A woman of contradiction; she can light up a room when she's happy, but will often force herself to stay stern. Growing up and working on a largely rural planet has turned her attitude into that of an old country physician, despite her young age. She is often withdrawn and quiet, preferring to let others talk, but only by keeping herself wrapped up tight, and repressing her natural personality. If pushed, she pushes back, but eventually that inner light shines through, for those who can prove they're more stubborn than she is. Her partner has managed to soften many of her rough edges, but she insists she has to work that much harder to maintain the acerbic wit everyone's come to expect of her.

Personal History Her mother left her father the day after finding out she was pregnant, using the help of a family friend to relocate to the rural, farming planet of Rigel V where she gave birth to a healthy 6 lb, 8oz baby girl.

Her childhood began normally with friends, exploring the woods outside the city of Ancient Grace where she lived, and making friends within the local clans. A more 'primitive' community than the city life, she learned how to entertain herself with toys, games and imagination, rather than computers and holodecks.

Her normal life ended at puberty, however, when she suddenly collapsed while climbing a tree, and was rushed to Ancient Grace's medical center. The rest of the planet being behind the times, Rigel V did have one of the better medical facilities and schools in the Federation, however her condition still left the Rigellians scratching their pointed ears in confusion.

Every system in her body was shutting down, like a shuttle running out of fuel with no explanation. It was as if she'd suddenly developed an entirely new set of dietary needs and her body was rejecting everything about her.

A week in a hospital room gave her ample time to get to know the doctors, and her mother was good enough to share everything she could with Nicole to help her learn about herself. Finally, unable to find a cause or a cure, they were reduced to treating the symptoms, attempting to match her body's needs. She was eventually released to her mother's care with strict instructions.

Nicole had spent the week watching her mother and suspecting she knew more than she let on, and had her suspicions confirmed when her mother sat down and explained that her sudden change was the result of a genetic virus that had been accidentally passed to her from her mother, via her father. It was incurable, and had several side effects that she would need to learn to master.

Shocked and horrified by her new condition, she decided to hide it from her friend and when she came of age, started training for Starfleet Academy. She made one attempt to contact her father, hoping he had a cure for her condition, but it proved nearly fruitless, only garnering her an elixir that would keep her hunger at bay temporarily. She was too angry for more and never spoke with him after that.

Her love of medicine already ingrained and bolstered by a need to make up for what she felt was an accident waiting to happen, she graduated from Starfleet Medical and Starfleet Academy, earning degrees as a surgeon and diagnostician, with specialties in Vulcanoid medicine and genetics. Shortly after returning home from graduation, she was recruited by Admiral Alan Markus to serve on board his ship as ACMO. She learned to find solace in a ship of people who didn't share her affliction, but shared a common thread of being unique. She made friends, and began to form a life. The Chief Medical Officer worked with her father's elixir and eventually came up with a refined version that could be taken periodically throughout the day to maintain her vital functions. Without it, her body would simply shut down.

Her next rough patch came when she was transferred on temporary assignment to the USS Ommadawn, serving as ACMO of the Galaxy-class ship, and CMO of it's Defiant-class escort. She rose to the challenge, despite frequently butting heads with the ship's CO, being promoted to CMO of both ships after a year, and earning the rank of Lieutenant.

But as Fate has a sense of humor, the ship where she grew was also the ship where she met a challenge she couldn't conquer: falling in love. Her own stubbornness about herself getting in the way, she could not accept that there was someone who could accept her for who she was, convincing herself that once he saw her dark side, he would go running.

Having learned to keep her condition to herself for several years, she was unprepared when it was forced into the spotlight during a confrontation with a vampyric species encountered by the Ommadawn. Her condition exposed, she was forced to take the shots to the gut of having to see disappointment in her Captain and shock in the face of the man she was finally starting to let in.

The emotional strain was too much for her, and despite saving her Captain's life (at the expense of an enemy's) she could not face another day. She poured her elixir out, laid down on her bed and closed her eyes, ready to say goodbye.

Again, Fate's sense of humor kicked in. The ship's counselor came to check on her, found her in her weakened state and immediately got her to Sickbay. Her former ship was contacted and they managed to save her, providing a strong dose of her elixir to restore her systems.

She was transferred back to her old ship in an attempt to give her time to heal, however the ship was destroyed by a saboteur, leaving her without a home. Contacts at Starfleet Intelligence, at the behest of the Nazareth's former CO, tapped her for an assignment while she waited for her new ship, the USS Castelnaudary, serving under her former XO, Captain Tiffany Edwards.

An undercover assignment that went south further caused her grief, and she was on the fence about remaining on board. However, the same saboteur who destroyed the Nazareth attempted to destroy the Castelnaudary. It took the combined efforts of herself and Captain Edwards to save the ship, but she was forced to kill someone who she thought was another romantic prospect.

The strain of losing another person close to her finally forced her to turn her back on her friends and Starfleet, returning to her home on Rigel V for an extended leave of absence. She used her credentials and influence to secure a position at the City of Ancient Grace's main medical center, rising to Chief of Surgery and finding, if not peace, at least a livable situation.

She became known for making house calls to the local clan communes, despite her schedule. She would often carry a little black bag, and still does, preferring to treat patients in their homes where they're comfortable.

With the current climate of the Federation and Starfleet's need for every able body, her LOA was revoked and she is now back in the saddle, turning her talents back towards the Galaxy, hoping it can withstand her.
